I have been struck today by the marked difference in performances (recordings) of a given aria or song. Lets take the aria 'Suicidio' from Amilcare Ponchielli's opera 'La Gioconda'. The music is so passionate and full of strong emotions. Yet for me, only Maria Callas can make it her own. I listen to other interpretations, and for me, there is only Callas. She was truly unique in every sense of the word. Her life was certainly not ordinary, and she made her mark on the world of opera. What sublime genius.
